Abd al-Rahman I

Nicknamed 'the Immigrant', he escaped the Umayyad massacre and refounded the dynasty in al-Andalus.

Historical context

He arrived in 755 and, after defeating his rivals, founded the Emirate. A cultured man and poet, longing for Damascus, he ordered the Mezquita built on a former basilica site.

What remains today

Without him neither the Mosque of Córdoba nor the Andalusi Umayyad line would exist.
