Abd al-Rahman III

The first caliph of the West. He pacified al-Andalus, defeated his enemies and founded Medina Azahara.

Historical context

Reigned 912–961. Christians and Jews served at his court; he received embassies from Byzantium and the northern kingdoms and consolidated a state modern for its time.
