Al-Mansur and the end of splendor

Strongman of the caliphate under Hisham II, he led the Andalusi army to its military peak.

Historical context

He launched dozens of campaigns against the Christian kingdoms but concentrated so much power that after his death in 1002 the caliphate collapsed in civil war, ending with the fitna of 1031.

What remains today

The last great expansion of the Mezquita and the sack of Medina Azahara closed the caliphal cycle.

Tips for the visitor

Look at the eastern nave: it's al-Mansur's expansion.
