In 929 Abd al-Rahman III proclaimed himself caliph, breaking with Baghdad and opening al-Andalus' golden century.

Historical context

The Caliphate unified territories, secured internal peace and projected Córdoba as a Mediterranean power. Diplomacy with Byzantium and the Holy Roman Empire, professional army, strong currency and intense cultural activity.

What remains today

Medina Azahara, the maqsura and the mihrab of the Mezquita are the monumental heart of this period.
