Córdoba's Sephardic community was one of the most influential in the medieval world.

Historical context

Under the Caliphate, Jews held diplomatic, medical and financial roles. Hasday Ibn Shaprut, physician to Abd al-Rahman III, led a Sephardic golden age. Maimonides was born in Córdoba in 1135.

What remains today

The 1315 Synagogue, Casa de Sefarad and the Maimonides statue are living witnesses.

Tips for the visitor

Walk the Jewish Quarter at dawn, almost empty.
