Emirate of Córdoba

The independent Emirate was founded in 756 by Abd al-Rahman I, the last surviving Umayyad prince.

Historical context

After the fall of the Umayyads in Damascus, Abd al-Rahman I crossed the Mediterranean and founded an emirate in al-Andalus, breaking from Baghdad. He began the Great Mosque in 785.

What remains today

The Emirate phase marks the origin of Andalusi art and architecture, visible in the first core of the Mezquita.
