Medina Azahara

The 'shining city' founded by Abd al-Rahman III in 936, 8 km from Córdoba.

Historical context

Designed as a political capital and caliphal symbol, it dazzled foreign embassies for seventy years. Sacked in 1010 during the fitna, it lay buried until its rediscovery in the 20th century. World Heritage since 2018.

What remains today

Today you can visit the Salón Rico, terraces and interpretation center. A shuttle bus runs from Córdoba.

Book ahead, bring water and check the official schedule; avoid midday in summer.
