The Mosque of Córdoba

Begun in 785 over a Visigothic basilica, it was expanded by four generations of rulers.

Historical context

Abd al-Rahman I built the first oratory. Abd al-Rahman II, al-Hakam II and al-Mansur expanded it. In 1236, after the Christian conquest by Ferdinand III, it became a cathedral. In the 16th century the Renaissance main chapel was inserted inside.

What remains today

Over a thousand years of history coexist in one building: bicolored arches, reused columns, golden mihrab, baroque chapels and Renaissance choir.
